A British sterling silver safe driving medal awarded by the National Safety First Association for the Freedom from Accidents Competition. The obverse features a central circular medallion with a red enameled triangle, inscribed NATIONAL SAFETY FIRST ASSOCIATION around the inner border and SAFETY FIRST within the central design. The outer legend reads FREEDOM FROM ACCIDENTS COMPETITION with a lower scroll reading 5 YEARS DRIVERS AWARD. The medal is suspended from a green and red striped ribbon carrying five silver year bars dated 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, and 1932. The reverse is engraved with the recipient name C. MASON. and carries a full set of Birmingham hallmarks including the maker mark AR&S for Arthur Richardson and Son, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter d for 1928. The National Safety First Association was the historical predecessor to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
Condition report:
The medal is in good original condition with a dark natural patina and toning to the silver surfaces. The red enamel shows some minor surface abrasions but remains intact. The ribbon exhibits fraying and wear consistent with age and use. All five year bars are firmly attached. The hallmarks and engraving are clearly legible.
