This white metal commemorative medal features the Emperor Charlemagne. The obverse exhibits a profile portrait with the Latin inscription CAROLVS MAGNVS and the dates 742 – 814. The reverse bears a map of the Carolingian Empire with the German legend DAS REICH DER KAROLINGER. The map contains geographical markers for NAVARRA, ROUEN, UTRECHT, CRAC, AUG-VIND, and SINIG, with a central imperial eagle device. A KG maker’s mark is located on the reverse field. The medal is constructed with a reeded edge.
Condition report:
Very fine. The medal shows significant dark toning around the periphery and within the recessed design elements. Occasional light surface marks and signs of wear from handling are present.
