UK George III copper Cartwheel coin, dated 1797, struck at the Soho Mint. This piece is either a penny (KM# 618) or a twopence (KM# 619). The coin features a wide, raised rim with incuse legends on both the obverse and reverse. The obverse rim bears the inscription GEORGIUS III . D : G . REX . while the reverse rim is inscribed BRITANNIA with the date 1797. Struck by Matthew Boulton using steam-powered machinery, these coins were engineered with thick rims to protect the central relief from wear.
Condition report:
Heavily circulated condition exhibiting significant wear that has flattened the central motifs on both faces. The surfaces display a dark, aged patina with extensive pitting and scattered oxidation. The raised rims show multiple small nicks, knocks, and abrasions consistent with long-term circulation. Equivalent to a Fair to Good grade.
