A Sheffield silver-plated salver and accompanying commemorative document, issued by the Conservative Party to mark Margaret Thatcher’s appointment as the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1979. The circular salver features a shaped and moulded rim in the Chippendale style. The centre of the tray is engraved with a facsimile signature of Margaret Thatcher above the inscription FIRST WOMAN PRIME MINISTER of THE UNITED KINGDOM.
The lot is accompanied by a commemorative document on The Conservative Party letterhead. The text reads: It has given me considerable pleasure to be able to co-operate in this venture to commemorate the first occasion in the long history of the British parliament that a woman has become Prime Minister. This Sheffield Silverplated Tray is one of a unique edition, specially manufactured and inscribed in Sheffield for this occasion and is a fine example of the craftsmanship of which Great Britain is justly proud. The document is hand-numbered 119 in the lower left corner and bears a signature from Margaret Thatcher.
Condition report:
The silver-plated salver shows minor surface scratches and light tarnish consistent with age and handling, with no significant dents or deep abrasions visible. The accompanying paper document has a central horizontal fold and exhibits noticeable foxing and yellowing, particularly around the edges.
