A pair of leather horse martingales mounted with a collection of cast brass horse brasses. These items were traditionally used as decorative harness trappings for heavy horses. One strap features a scalloped leather border and is mounted with brasses depicting a dromedary camel, a traditional post mill windmill, a heavy draught horse within a foliate frame, and a fourth brass with a pierced stylized floral design. The second strap is a plain leather strap with a buckle at the top and a metal suspension ring at the bottom, mounted with brasses depicting a stag within a serrated circular frame, a plain lobed brass, and a rampant lion set within a horseshoe-shaped frame with circular piercings. The brasses are manufactured using a casting technique. No maker’s marks or hallmarks are present.
Condition report:
The items are in a worn, vintage condition. The leather straps show evidence of significant drying, cracking, and fraying throughout. One strap is truncated at the lower end. The brasses display a varied aged patina, surface tarnish, and traces of verdigris in recessed areas. One brass on the shorter strap shows more pronounced surface wear and corrosion compared to the others.
