Start price: £20

Estimated price: £40 - £60

Buyer's Premium:

A mid-century wooden firescreen featuring a rectangular frame housing a hand-embroidered crewel-work panel. The frame, possibly constructed from mahogany or stained beech, is supported by two uprights on a trestle base with splayed feet. The needlework depicts a floral arrangement of various blooms, including anemones, worked in colourful threads in shades of blue, purple, red, and orange on a cream-coloured fabric ground. The embroidery is protected by a pane of glass secured with small brass corner clips. The reverse features a plywood backing and a hinged wooden stay used to adjust the screen’s angle. This style of firescreen was a common functional and decorative item in British households during the 1940s and 1950s.

Condition report:

The item is in good vintage condition. The wooden frame and base show minor surface wear, scuffs, and small indentations consistent with age and domestic use, particularly around the feet. The embroidered panel retains vibrant colours; however, there is visible foxing and light staining to the cream fabric background, most notably along the lower and upper-left edges. The glass is intact and free from cracks.
