This lot comprises two British military brass casings. The larger item is a Mark IV casing for a 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun, dated 1944. The base features stamped markings including 40MM IV, RLB, 7/F 1944, and LOT 101. The RLB mark identifies the manufacturer as Royal Laboratories Birtley. The smaller item is a brass casing for an electrically fired aircraft engine starter cartridge, historically used in Coffman-style starter systems for high-performance piston-engine aircraft. The base is stamped with CART. ELEC. ENG. STARTER, 088 GD, RLB, and the British broad arrow Pheon symbol. It also carries black stencilled markings including NO 9 MK and a circular inspection stamp containing the number 98. Both items are inert and spent.
Condition report:
Both items are in spent, fired condition. They exhibit a natural aged patina and surface oxidation consistent with age. The 40mm casing shows minor deformation and denting to the open mouth rim. There are no major structural cracks or failures.
