A tin-glazed earthenware (faience) lidded soup tureen and matching circular stand, produced in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, France. The tureen is of rounded, footed form with twin scrolled handles and a domed lid topped with a decorative scrolled finial. It sits upon a conforming wide circular stand. The set is hand-painted in polychrome enamels on a white ground, featuring “oiseaux de paradis” (birds of paradise) amidst floral sprays and scattered insects, including butterflies. The borders consist of formal yellow and green bands with blue foliate and trellis-work patterns. The underside of the tureen is marked in hand-painted black script MOUSTIERS. F.H.
Condition report:
There is a significant chip to the rim of the tureen bowl. The lot shows minor surface wear, occasional glaze imperfections, and light flea bites to the edges consistent with age and the nature of the ceramic type. Prospective buyers are advised to inspect the finial and handles for any old professional repairs.
