A tiered cantilever jewellery box designed in the form of a stack of two books. The exterior is clad in repousse white metal panels, likely aluminium, over a wooden or composite core. The top lid is decorated with six rectangular panels, four featuring caparisoned elephants and two with central floral motifs, all enclosed within scrolling foliate and floral borders. The curved spines of the book-form case are similarly embossed with floral bands and rope-twist patterns. The box is secured with a simple hinged metal clasp. The interior is lined throughout with black velvet-effect material and features a cantilever mechanism that extends four small square storage trays when the lid is opened. The base includes a central ring roll. The underside of the lid is fitted with a shaped mirror set against a velvet background.
Condition report:
The jewellery box is in good overall condition. The white metal exterior shows light surface tarnishing and minor wear consistent with age and use. The interior velvet lining remains intact with some light accumulation of dust and minor surface marks. The cantilever mechanism and hinged clasp are in functional order.
