An antique laundry tool, known as a posser, laundry dolly, or washing plunger, designed for the manual agitation of clothes within a wash tub. The piece comprises a bell-shaped conical head made of copper, featuring a flared rim with eight circular ventilation and drainage holes. The copper head is fitted to a long, turned wooden handle with a rounded grip. The side of the head bears an embossed circular maker’s mark for Simplex No 4.
Condition report:
The item displays a genuine aged patina and shows evidence of utilitarian use. The copper head has surface tarnish and areas of green oxidisation, alongside several shallow dents and minor surface indentations. The wooden handle is structurally sound but exhibits surface wear, prominent graining, and darkening consistent with age and exposure to water.
