Estimated price: £15 - £20

Buyer's Premium:

A utilitarian artist’s studio mortar and matching pestle. The mortar is crafted from white-glazed ceramic, likely stoneware or heavy earthenware, featuring a stout circular form with a wide flat rim and a low footed base. The pestle comprises a white ceramic grinding head attached to a turned and tapered wooden handle with a rounded terminal knob. The interior base of the mortar and the grinding surface of the pestle head are unglazed with a matte texture. A handwritten mark in black ink is visible on the exterior of the mortar, comprising a short vertical dashed line above a stylized cursive character resembling an S or g. No factory stamps or manufacturer marks are present. The piece exhibits various splashes of blue, orange, and yellow pigments, consistent with use for grinding artists’ paints.

Condition report:

The item is in used studio condition. It features prominent splashes and stains of various pigments, particularly around the rim and body. There is expected wear and discolouration to the grinding surfaces. The wooden handle shows age-related wear. No significant cracks or chips are visible to the ceramic components.
