A mid-20th-century cast composition or plaster bust depicting an African woman. The figure is rendered with naturalistic facial features and a textured coiffure, wearing a simple collar necklace with rounded accents. The sculpture is finished with a dark, mottled brown patina intended to simulate the appearance of weathered bronze or stone. The piece is self-based with an integrated flat underside. No maker marks, signatures, or foundry stamps were found upon inspection of the base or the body of the work. The item appears to be a decorative casting in the style of mid-century ethnographic art.
Condition report:
The bust shows significant signs of surface wear and damage. There are numerous chips and abrasions to the patinated finish, most prominently on the nose, chin, forehead, and around the edges of the base. These losses reveal the lighter-coloured underlying cast material. There is general surface scuffing throughout and dust accumulation within the recessed areas of the textured hair.
