A mid-20th-century decorative ceramic jardiniere or cachepot produced by Bretby Art Pottery. The vessel features a compressed, bulbous form with two large integrally molded scroll handles. The exterior is finished in a dark brown matte glaze characteristic of the factorys Black Ware range, designed to emulate the appearance of bronze or wood. The sides are decorated with high-relief molded figures in traditional Japanese attire, such as kimonos, set against a textured cream-coloured background with stylized cloud motifs. The figures and landscape details are finished with polychrome cold-painted highlights in red, yellow, black, and white. The base of the piece is marked with the incised text BLACK WARE and REG. NO. APP. FOR, alongside the stamped shape number 2062. A small yellow hand-painted mark is also present on the underside.
Height: 18.5 cm
Width (including handles): 35.5 cm.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age and use consistent with mid-20th-century ceramics. There is significant flaking and wear to the cold-painted polychrome decoration on the figures. Small chips and glaze flakes are visible along the top rim and the footrim. The interior shows surface dirt and mineral deposits from previous use as a planter. No major structural cracks or professional restorations are evident.
