This utilitarian storage or workshop chest is constructed from dark-stained softwood planks, likely pine. The piece features a simple plank construction with a hinged lid. Internally, the chest is finished in black and retains wooden support brackets on the side walls, suggesting it may have originally accommodated internal trays. The hardware is comprised of three later-added brass-finished butt hinges and a metal lid-stay on the right side. The front is secured with a basic wire-loop clasp and pin. There are no visible maker’s marks, labels, or inscriptions on the exterior or interior surfaces.
Condition report:
The chest is in a well-used as-found condition, consistent with its utilitarian purpose. The dark-stained finish shows significant overall wear, including numerous scuffs, deep scratches, and prominent drips of light-coloured paint or varnish on the front and lid. There is minor chipping and rounding to the edges and corners. The hardware is a later replacement.
