Description
A pair of decorative black leather martingales featuring twelve cast brass horse medallions. The collection represents the complete zodiac, with each medallion depicting a different astrological sign. One strap displays Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn; the second strap displays Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Cancer. The medallions are manufactured using a cast openwork technique and include raised lettering for identification. They are mounted onto the shaped black leather straps via individual leather loops. Each martingale is finished with a functional cast brass buckle at the top. These items are examples of traditional British decorative horse brasses intended for home display.
Condition report:
Both martingales show signs of age and display. The cast brass medallions exhibit a naturally darkened patina with significant green verdigris oxidation concentrated in the recessed details and around the edges. The black leather straps show moderate surface wear, creasing, and cracking consistent with age and the weight of the brasses.
