Lot 63:
Description
This traditional German-style lidded beer stein is constructed from relief-moulded stoneware with a dark cobalt blue glazed ground. The body features a central frieze depicting a tavern scene with three figures—a woman in the centre flanked by two men—seated around a table with a beer barrel. The figures are dressed in period attire, including one man in a top hat and another in a military-style peaked cap. The scene is framed by elaborate foliate scrolls and lattice-work patterns. A moulded scroll to the right of the figures bears the German inscription: Wer ruht und steht, den trifft kein Neid, Ruh ist das beste Kleid. This translates approximately to: He who rests and stands is not affected by envy; peace is the best garment. The upper and lower borders of the body are decorated with repeating floral and geometric relief motifs. The stein is fitted with a multi-tiered, conical pewter lid featuring a decorative finial and a hinged thumb-lift attached to a relief-decorated ceramic handle.
Height: 26.5 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in good overall condition. The stoneware body shows no visible chips, cracks, or signs of restoration. The pewter lid displays a natural aged patina and minor surface wear consistent with age. A small adhesive label is present on the upper ceramic rim.
