Description
A carved soapstone name seal of square-sectioned form. The seal is surmounted by a figurative group featuring Shoulao, the Chinese God of Longevity, identifiable by his prominent cranium and long beard. He is shown holding a gnarled staff and is accompanied by a small child or acolyte. The piece is fashioned from a mottled greenish-yellow stone with natural variegation. The base is incised with the name DAVID in Latin characters and the Chinese transliteration 大卫 (Dawei). Red cinnabar ink residue is present on the underside.
Condition report:
The item displays minor surface wear, small abrasions, and tiny chips to the edges of the plinth and the carved figures. There is heavy residue of red seal paste on the stamping surface.
