Lot 68:
Description
A First World War period enamelled sweetheart badge for the 12th Canadian Mounted Rifles (CMR), an overseas unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The badge is constructed from 925 silver in the form of a maple leaf. It is surmounted by a Tudor Crown featuring red enamel detail. The central circular device consists of a translucent red enameled ground with the number 12 in relief, surrounded by a white enameled ring inscribed MOUNTED RIFLES. This is flanked by two blue enameled scrolls inscribed OVERSEAS to the top and CANADA to the bottom. The reverse is fitted with a horizontal pin and C-clasp fastening.
Condition report:
The badge is in good overall condition. The polychrome enamel is largely intact and bright, exhibiting some minor surface scratches and internal crazing consistent with age. There is a natural dark patina to the 925 silver, particularly within the textured areas of the maple leaf. The pin-back fastening is functional.
