Lot 257:
Description
An extensive collection of vintage British earthenware salad ware, featuring characteristic moulded lettuce and cabbage leaf designs in a vibrant green high-gloss glaze. The set is attributed to makers such as Carlton Ware, Beswick, and Shorter and Son, typical of mid-20th-century decorative tableware produced in the United Kingdom. The assortment includes two large serving bowls of varying forms, a large circular divided hors d oeuvre platter, various leaf-shaped serving platters and plates of different sizes, two sauce or gravy boats with matching stands, a tomato-shaped lidded preserve pot, a lidded butter dish on a stand, and a pair of ceramic-handled salad servers decorated with hand-painted butterfly motifs. The collection also features a circular strainer plate with drainage holes and several small condiment or dipping dishes. Many pieces are embellished with moulded and painted red tomato or fruit accents. One leaf-shaped plate is finished in an off-white glaze with orange accents.
Divided platter approx. 11 inches diameter.
Strainer plate approx. 8.5 inches diameter.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of age-appropriate wear and use. Visible crazing is present on several pieces, most notably on the lid of the tomato-shaped preserve pot. Minor chips are visible on the rims of a few leaf plates and the handle of one salad server. The set is otherwise in good vintage condition.
