Description

A collection of antiquarian music scores, volumes, and associated ephemera. The primary item is a folio edition of Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation, arranged for voices and piano forte by Muzio Clementi. This work was published in London by Clementi, Banger, Hyde, Collard and Davis at No. 26 Cheapside, dating to the early nineteenth century. It carries a contemporary Edinburgh bookseller’s stamp for William White. The lot also contains multiple blue cloth-bound volumes of The History of Music by Emil Naumann, edited by the Rev. Sir F.A. Gore Ouseley and published by Cassell and Company. The volumes present are I, II, IV, and V, featuring gilt-decorated spines. Accompanying items include a pamphlet for Serge Prokofieff’s Symphonie Classique and a book containing musical analysis of Wagner’s Die Walküre.

Condition report:

Items exhibit significant age-related wear. The Haydn score is fragile, with heavy foxing, chipped edges, and a worn paper binding. The Naumann volumes show fading to the cloth and wear to the spine ends, and the set is incomplete. General toning, spotting, and frayed edges are present throughout the collection.
