Description

This antique intercommunication wall telephone is identified as a Primax system, manufactured by the Sterling Telephone & Electric Co. Ltd. of London. The unit is constructed with a dark-stained wooden housing, likely oak, mounted upon a large oval-shaped plinth base. The telephone features a fixed, horn-shaped black transmitter with a metal mesh screen and a separate handheld ebonite receiver. The receiver remains connected to the base by a braided, fabric-covered cord. A single large metal bell gong is positioned at the top of the wooden assembly. At the base of the unit is a semi-circular selector dial comprising twelve numbered brass contact buttons and a central metal pointer arm used for station selection within an internal system. A metal cradle switch hook is located on the right side of the central wooden box. A rectangular brass plaque is mounted to the front below the transmitter, although the original engraved text is heavily worn.

Condition report:

The telephone is in a well-used antique condition with prominent signs of age and wear. The wooden cabinet exhibits surface abrasions, scuffs, and areas of finish loss. Metal components, including the bell, transmitter housing, and selector dial, show heavy patina, tarnishing, and surface oxidation. The braided fabric cord for the receiver is severely frayed and shows significant material degradation. The internal mechanics and electrical functionality are untested; the item is sold as a decorative or restoration piece.
