Description
A collection of fifteen military gift certificate tokens, colloquially known as pogs, issued by the United States Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and the United Kingdom Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI). These printed cardstock tokens were utilised as small-change currency in military exchange facilities during overseas deployments in the early 21st century. The group includes denominations of 5 cents, 10 cents, and 25 cents. The designs feature various military themes associated with the War on Terror, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Visual imagery includes Apache and Chinook helicopters, naval vessels, soldiers in desert environments, and various camouflage patterns. Several tokens commemorate the 90th anniversary of the NAAFI with the dates 1920-2010. Specific years printed on the tokens include 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. One token features branding for The Blue.
Condition report:
The tokens are in a circulated condition consistent with their use in a military field environment. Observable wear includes softening and minor fraying to the cardboard edges, light surface rubbing, and minor soiling.
