Description

A collection of 27 circular military gift certificates, colloquially known as pogs, issued for use in overseas military exchanges during the Global War on Terrorism. These tokens were produced by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), the Navy Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI), and the Expeditionary Forces Institute (EFI) for use in operational theatres including Iraq and Afghanistan. The lot includes denominations of 5c, 10c, and 25c. The AAFES examples are printed with the text: This gift certificate has a retail value of [denomination] and is redeemable at any AAFES facility. The NAAFI and EFI examples include organisational crests and text stating: Serving the Services for over 90 years and Valid and redeemable in any EFI facility trading in US Dollars. The tokens are dated between 2004 and 2011. Imagery depicted includes military hardware such as M1 Abrams tanks, M1114 Humvees, B-1B Lancer bombers, aircraft carrier flight deck operations featuring F/A-18 Hornets, and transport helicopters. Personnel are shown in various uniforms including Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) and Army Combat Uniform (ACU) patterns, alongside a military working dog and scenes of interaction with local populations. One token bears the partial inscription Operation Iraqi.
