Lot 69:
Description
A large ceramic twin-handled footed bowl or jardiniere of boat-shaped form, constructed from a heavy light-bodied ceramic. The piece is finished in a deep peacock blue glaze and decorated in a neo-Rococo style. The central body features a large cartouche depicting a classical mythological scene with figures in draped robes and a chariot, signed Kaufmann in script to the lower right of the panel. This signature refers to the style of Angelica Kaufmann, a common subject for decorative European ceramics of this period. The scene is framed by raised scrolling motifs in pale yellow, pink, and green enamels, with extensive gilded highlights. The bowl features pierced scrolled handles and stands on an ornate scrolled pedestal base. The underside of the base is partially glazed in teal and bears a hand-painted script mark resembling the numeral 9 or letter g.
Width: 31cm
Height: 19cm.
Condition report:
The piece exhibits significant and visible crazing to the glaze, particularly within the decorated panels and light-coloured borders. There is noticeable wear to the gilding on the high points of the scrolled handles and the pedestal base. Minor losses to the enamel decoration are present on the handles. No chips, cracks, or professional repairs are visible.
