Lot 38:
Description
The lot consists of two items of British military interest. The first item is a First World War 1914-15 Star campaign medal. It is a bronze four-pointed star with crossed swords, surmounted by a crown. The central wreath of oak leaves surrounds a scroll inscribed 1914-15, with the Royal Cypher GV for King George V at the base. The reverse is officially impressed with the naming: 15280 PTE J. BURTON YORK & LANC R. The second item is a Second Boer War commemorative sweetheart brooch or badge. It is constructed from a silver-toned metal in a horseshoe shape. The frame is inscribed S. AFRICA 1900. The central motif features a crowned light infantry bugle horn with the numerals 51 within the twist, identifying the 51st (2nd Yorkshire West Riding) Regiment of Foot, later the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. A scroll is embossed beneath the bugle. The reverse features a horizontal pin and C-clasp fastener. A small, illegible mark is located near the hinge.
Condition report:
The 1914-15 Star exhibits a dark bronze patina with light surface marks consistent with age. The suspension ring is intact, though the original ribbon is absent. The commemorative brooch shows surface wear and tarnish. The pin and clasp mechanism remains functional. No clear hallmarks are visible.
