Description
A maritime oil painting on canvas by the British artist John Ambrose Donovan. The work depicts a large three-masted wooden man-of-war in the foreground under full sail, accompanied by a smaller vessel in the middle distance. To the right, a coastline with a lighthouse is visible under a pale, hazy sky. The composition captures the reflections of a low sun on the water’s surface. The painting is executed in a traditional maritime style with fine detail in the vessel’s rigging and broad, blended strokes in the sky and sea. The work is signed Ambrose in white paint to the lower right. It is presented in a dark mahogany-toned wooden frame with a thin gilt-effect inner slip.
