Lot 353:
Description
A two-over-two chest of drawers in the late Georgian style, likely of early 20th-century manufacture. The piece is constructed from mahogany-stained hardwood with a rectangular top featuring a slightly projecting edge. The drawer configuration consists of two short drawers over two long graduated drawers. The drawers are constructed with machine-cut dovetail joints and feature light-coloured secondary wood linings, likely pine or deal. The carcass is supported by four tapered legs terminating in ring-turned feet. The drawers are fitted with decorative brass-shaped backplates and drop bail handles. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The piece is in used condition with significant signs of wear. The top surface shows extensive staining, white ring marks, and areas of finish loss. The drawer fronts and frame exhibit various scratches, scuffs, and small dings consistent with age and use. The brass hardware shows surface oxidation and a heavy patina. One handle on the bottom drawer appears slightly misaligned.
