Description
This silk embroidery panel depicts the traditional Taoist theme of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea (Baxian guo hai). The figures are worked in polychrome silk threads on a deep teal-blue silk ground, shown riding a log-form vessel over stylised crested waves. Two cranes, representing longevity, are embroidered in the upper left corner. The upper right quadrant features four embroidered Chinese characters reading 八仙過海 (Bāxiān guò hǎi), identifying the narrative scene. The work is mounted with a patterned silk brocade border and presented in a modern black-stained wooden frame under glass. A small label on the glass describes the piece as Chinese Silk and refers to the narrative as the victory of the Immortal Eight over the Dragon King.
Condition report:
The embroidery is in good condition with the silk ground and thread colours remaining well-preserved. No significant fading or thread loss is visible through the glass. The frame shows minor surface wear and light scuffing consistent with age. Not examined out of the frame.
