A substantial collection of printed postcards from the First World War, dating circa 1916 to 1918. The archive comprises an extensive range of British military and propaganda imagery, including official government-sanctioned photography and commercial series. The collection includes series published as Daily Mail War Postcards and those marked as Official Photograph – Crown Copyright Reserved. Subject matter includes infantry manoeuvres such as East Yorks Going, Indian Army troops, artillery and anti-aircraft units, medical services including Red Cross ambulances, and Royal visits to the front by King George V. Other scenes depict trench life and captured enemy positions. Visible transcriptions include 101. EAST YORKS GOING… OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH – CROWN COPYRIGHT RESERVED, 102. Official Photograph – Crown Copyright, 110. AN INDIAN… OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH, and 104. ANTI AIRCRAFT… OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH. The cards are housed in four cardboard storage containers, one of which bears the printed name of the retail chemist Boots. This collection represents a significant domestic record of the war effort intended for the United Kingdom home front.

Condition report:

The collection is in generally good vintage condition. The cards show expected signs of age including toning and minor foxing, particularly to the edges. Some cards show light wear to the corners and edges from storage. No significant tears or heavy creases are immediately apparent on the visible samples.
