Description
A hand-carved folk-art style wooden figurine depicting a nautical figure, identified as a sea captain or sailor. The character is depicted with a full beard and a peaked officer’s cap featuring an incised anchor emblem. The figure is wearing a double-breasted pea coat with hands tucked into the pockets. The carving is set upon an integral rectangular base designed to resemble a wooden deck or crate, featuring stylized incised lines and circular motifs. The item is constructed from wood with a dark brown stain and a polished wax or varnish finish. Several incised marks consisting of small circles and straight lines are present on the base and pedestal sides; these appear decorative in nature as no legible alphabetic or numerical maker’s marks are visible.
