Lot 201:
Description
A mid-20th century Japanese lacquer-ware photo album featuring a black lacquer cover decorated with a raised scene in gold and red tones. The decoration depicts Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, within a landscape of mountains and pine trees, with a peacock perched upon the roof. This central motif is enclosed by a geometric fretwork border with stylised floral corner motifs. The interior contains paper pages featuring hand-painted watercolour illustrations of birds and floral subjects. Each page is designed with diagonal slits for the mounting of photographs.
Condition report:
The lacquer cover exhibits visible surface wear and minor loss to the lacquer concentrated along the edges. The interior paper pages show light age-related toning and minor foxing, consistent with age and use.
