Lot 174:
Description
A Victorian mechanical pencil holder by the renowned maker S. Mordan and Co. The piece is constructed from white metal and features a detailed engine-turned hobnail pattern across the cylindrical barrel. A smooth vertical reserve on the textured surface is stamped with the maker’s mark S. MORDAN and CO. The item is designed for suspension from a chatelaine or watch chain, featuring a circular jump ring at the terminal. The holder comprises two distinct parts: a decorative outer sleeve and a removable wooden-cased pencil insert, which is finished with a matching white metal finial.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age-appropriate wear and tarnishing to the white metal surfaces. The wooden pencil insert is intact, though the lead tip is broken. The friction fit between the sleeve and the pencil insert remains secure.
