Description
A Napoleonic commemorative medal, L’Egypte Conquise, designed by Denon and engraved by Jouannin and Brenet. This piece celebrates the conquest of Egypt in 1798. The obverse features a high-relief neoclassical bust of a youthful Napoleon Bonaparte wearing a laurel wreath, with the inscription J. JOUANNIN. F. DENON. D. along the bottom edge of the portrait. The reverse depicts a symbolic scene of a general in a chariot drawn by two camels, being crowned by a winged Victory figure, set between an Egyptian obelisk and a classical column. This side is inscribed L’EGYPTE CONQUISE and dated MDCCXCVIII in Roman numerals, with the engraver mark BRENET. F. DENON. D. at the base.
Condition report:
The medal exhibits a rich golden-brown patina with minor surface scratches and light wear consistent with age.
