Description

A commemorative medal from the early 19th-century Series of National Medals directed by James Mudie. The obverse features a Neoclassical profile bust of Napoleon Bonaparte in military uniform, inscribed NAPOLEON EMP. ET ROI. and signed by the engraver ANDRIEU F. The reverse depicts two masted ships at sea, commemorating the surrender of Napoleon to Captain Maitland on 15 July 1815. The reverse is inscribed SURRENDER TO H.B.M.S. BELLEROPHON CAPT. MAITLAND. with the Roman numeral date XV. JULY MDCCCXV in the exergue. The signatures MUDIE D. and BRENET F. are present on the reverse.


Condition report:

The medal shows a rich golden-brown patina with minor surface wear and toning consistent with age. The struck details and inscriptions remain clear and well-defined.
