Description
A collection of thirteen glazed porcelain animal figurines produced by Wade Ceramics. The group features one large tortoise and twelve miniature figures, commonly known as Whimsies. The subjects include an owl, a koala, a squirrel, a pig, a lion, a cow, a small green owl, a beaver, an otter, an orangutan, a raccoon, and a rhinoceros. Each piece is finished in a characteristic high-gloss glaze with various naturalistic tones. The large tortoise features a detailed shell with segmented patterns in brown, tan, and blue-grey. The base of the tortoise is impressed with the marks WADE, PORCELAIN, MADE IN ENGLAND, and the letter S. The smaller miniatures are consistent in style and manufacture with the Wade Whimsies series, many of which were historically distributed as premiums in Red Rose Tea.
Condition report:
The collection is in good overall condition. No significant chips, cracks, or restorations are evident. Minor shelf wear is visible on the unglazed contact points of the bases. A small area of surface residue or old adhesive is present on one of the rear legs of the tortoise. Minor manufacturing imperfections and tiny glaze nicks, typical of mass-produced porcelain miniatures, may be present.
