Description

An Edwardian 925 silver and enamel football medal by Vaughton and Sons, Birmingham, dated 1901. The medal is constructed in the form of a crowned shield featuring blue enamel banners inscribed CUMBERLAND FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. The central heraldic crest depicts a lion, castle, and waves in red, green, and blue enamel. The reverse is engraved FRIZINGTON WHITE STAR CUP WINNERS 1901 – 2 Wm Cameron. Hallmarks include the maker mark V and S, the Birmingham anchor, the lion passant, and the date letter b. The medal is also stamped VAUGHTON BIRMm. The lot includes a newspaper obituary for William Roger Cameron, which details his history as a miner at Welbeck Colliery and his participation in football and athletics.

Condition report:

The 925 silver medal displays tarnish and light surface scratching consistent with age and use. There are small areas of enamel loss to the blue banners and the central crest. The newspaper clipping is in a fragile state with yellowing, tattered edges, and fold lines.
