Description
A vintage Wills’s Cigarette Picture-Card album produced by W.D. and H.O. Wills, originally retailing for the price of one penny. The album features a soft cardstock cover with decorative border designs and a handwritten title reading Royal Family in blue ink. The interior contains an assortment of cigarette cards primarily documenting the British Royal Family, including cards from the Our King and Queen series. Visible cards include depictions of the Coronation Durbar in India, Alexandra Rose Day, the King at the Front, and various state tours including the Prince of Wales at Ottawa and the opening of the Federal Parliament in Canberra. Other cards depict sporting events such as A Game of Golf, 1924 and Playing Polo for Lords v. Commons. Each card slot is accompanied by printed descriptive text detailing the historical event or royal engagement. The album is constructed with a simple paper-leaf format designed to hold a specific series of cards.
Condition report:
The album shows signs of age consistent with mid-20th-century ephemera, including foxing, general yellowing of the paper, and staining to the covers. There is visible wear to the edges and corners of the cardstock. The collection is incomplete, with several empty card slots throughout the interior.
