Description
This bronze commemorative medal, designed by the engraver Nicolas-Guy-Antoine Brenet and published by James Mudie, commemorates the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte to the British in 1815. The obverse features a right-facing profile bust of Napoleon in military uniform, inscribed with the legend NAPOLEON EMP. ET ROI. The reverse depicts the HMS Bellerophon at sea with a second vessel in the background, surrounded by the text SURRENDER TO H.B.M. S. BELLEROPHON CAPT. MAITLAND. The exergue is dated XV. JULY MDCCCXV. Maker marks for James Mudie and Brenet are struck at the base of the reverse. This piece is part of a series of medals commissioned by Mudie to record British military history.
Condition report:
The medal displays a warm aged patina throughout. There are minor surface marks and light wear to the high points of the relief consistent with age and handling.
