Description

A bronze commemorative medal from the series of National Medals published by James Mudie. The obverse features a right-facing relief profile bust of Napoleon Bonaparte in military uniform, designed by Nicolas-Guy-Antoine Brenet. The bust is accompanied by the inscription NAPOLEON EMP. ET ROI. and the medalist signature at the base. The reverse illustrates a maritime scene featuring two sailing ships, commemorating the surrender of Napoleon to Captain Maitland on the HMS Bellerophon. It bears the upper inscription SURRENDER TO H.B.M. S. BELLEROPHON CAPT MAITLAND. and the Roman numeral date XV JULY MDCCCXV in the exergue.

The medal appears in overall good condition, exhibiting minor surface wear and slight pitting. There are localised areas of darker toning consistent with age.
