Lot 212:
Description
A Chinese export reverse glass painting depicting the Daoist motif of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, as indicated by the four gold-tone calligraphic characters 八仙過海 (Baxian guo hai) in the upper right. The scene illustrates the eight legendary figures in multi-coloured robes aboard a stylised, branch-like vessel navigating across waves, with two cranes soaring in the sky. The artwork is rendered against a dark teal ground. It is presented within a decorative olive-green and gold patterned brocade mat and housed in a black-finished wooden frame under glass. A printed label affixed to the glass identifies the piece as Chinese Silk and describes the scene as the victory of the Eight Immortals over the Dragon King.
Condition report:
The piece is in good overall condition with well-preserved colours. The frame shows minor surface wear. The item has not been examined outside of the frame.
