Lot 412:
Description
A rectangular English brass coal or kindling box featuring embossed and repoussé panels. The central front panel depicts a domestic genre scene of several figures gathered in a kitchen interior with a visible hearth in the background. This central scene is framed by an ornate border of repeating shell-like palmette motifs and scrollwork, set within a rope-twist edge. The piece is constructed from brass sheet metal over a base structure and is fitted with a small, arched decorative brass handle mounted to the top. Similar examples are frequently attributed to English manufacturers such as Lombard and were utilised for fireside storage or as magazine holders.
Condition report:
The piece shows surface tarnishing and oxidisation throughout. There are minor indentations and surface wear consistent with age and functional fireplace use.
