A carved stone bust depicting a woman with African features, consistent with Shona stone sculpture traditions. The figure is rendered with textured, short-cropped hair and a simple torque-style necklace. The piece is crafted from a dark-coloured stone, such as soapstone, with a polished exterior finish. The sculpture stands on a flat, integral base with no discernible signatures or maker’s marks.
Condition report:
The sculpture exhibits significant surface wear and abrasions throughout. There are numerous small chips and areas of loss to the dark surface finish, particularly on the face, nose, and hair, which reveal the lighter-coloured stone substrate beneath. The base shows minor scuffing consistent with age and handling.
