This is a single wheel-thrown ceramic vessel by contemporary studio potter Christine Gittins, as confirmed by associated documentation. The vessel is constructed of high-burnished earthenware clay and remains unglazed. The form is globular, featuring a wide, bulbous body that tapers dramatically up to a narrow cylindrical neck. The surface decoration is achieved through a smoking or pit firing technique, resulting in a highly variegated coloration that ranges from pale cream and dusty tan to deep charcoal gray and black. Fine black linear markings across the body are characteristic of organic material, specifically horsehair, being applied during the firing process. The base of the vessel bears an impressed circular maker’s mark, which appears to be a stylized logo or floral design. Gittins is noted for producing pots that are wheel thrown in earthenware clay and finely turned to produce a smooth finish, exploring surface decoration inspired by primitive cultures and the unpredictable results of smoking and polishing unglazed, highly burnished clay surfaces.
