A limited edition print by Joe Scarborough, titled ‘Fire’, dated 1986. The print features a bustling urban scene in a vibrant, naive or folk art style, depicting the Central Fire Station in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The image includes various figures, buildings, and vehicles, with text within the image such as ‘J.M.’s CAFE’, ‘BAKERS’, ‘BUTCHERY’, and ‘DRISTERS BREWED ALE’. The print is signed ‘Joe Scarborough’ in the lower right margin. It was ‘Produced by Studio Editions for South Yorkshire Firemen Benevolent Society’ and ‘Printed in England by Slater Printing Ltd’. A detailed label on the reverse indicates it is one of a ‘LIMITED EDITION OF 200 PRINTS’ commissioned by the South Yorkshire Firemen’s Historical Society. The label further describes the scene as the Central Fire Station in Sheffield, built in 1883 and extended in 1938, illustrating the environment of Sheffield with terraced housing (‘Little Masters’), a block of flats showing a spectacular rescue by city firemen, one of whom received the Queen’s Medal for Gallantry. It also depicts a scene from the Sheffield Blitz, showing the now derelict Victoria Railway Station with the evacuation of children. The bottom left corner shows a modern fire engine, and the ‘White Horse’ public house. The painting was commissioned to assist with funds to renovate a Fire Service Museum. The print is housed in a simple wooden frame with a taped cardboard backing.
