A rectangular, hinged sterling silver case, extensively decorated to the exterior with floral and foliate engraving or repoussé work, characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. The upper left features an engraved monogram “JFH”. The interior opens to two compartments, each fitted with a blue elastic strap, indicating its use as a cigarette or card case. Prominent hallmarks on the interior include the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for Birmingham, the date letter ‘a’ for 1899, and the maker’s mark ‘W&H’ for Walker & Hall.
