General Auction including Gold, Silver & Cars ( 14% Buyers Commission )
A lot of three sterling silver souvenir spoons, manufactured by Mappin & Webb for the 1937 Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, commissioned by the West Riding County Council. Each spoon features a finial adorned with the royal cypher ‘GR’ and dual monarch profiles, above ‘CORONATION 1937’ embossed on the handle. Hallmarks on the stems confirm ‘MAPPIN & WEBB’, a lion passant, crown, and ‘W’ date letter, indicating Sheffield sterling silver. The reverse of the handles bears the inscription ‘SOUVENIR FROM W.R.C.C.’ and ‘WEST RIDING COUNTY COUNCIL’. Two of the spoons are presented in their original blue cardboard boxes, which are printed with ‘Coronation of H.M. King George VI & H.M. Queen Elizabeth May 1937’ and ‘With the Best Wishes of the West Riding County Council’.
