Buyer's premium:

A Japanese Satsuma Gyokushu polychrome and gilt baluster vase. This elaborately decorated ceramic vase features a classic baluster form, with a bulbous body tapering towards a flared neck and a narrow mouth, resting on a substantial footed base. It is densely adorned with polychrome enamels and extensive gilding, showcasing a rich palette of deep red, black, gold, white, and various floral and landscape accents. The decoration includes a red ground with intricate gold scrolling motifs, a black ground densely dotted with white enamel and accented by chrysanthemum-like flowers, and paneled sections on the body. These panels depict figural scenes of women in traditional attire amidst foliage and flowers, interspersed with geometric patterns of raised gold dots on a cream ground, all framed by raised gold scrollwork. The base is unglazed but reveals a crackled, off-white glazed interior. A red rectangular sticker on the base bears vertical Japanese characters that read “大日本薩摩玉秀” (Dai Nippon Satsuma Gyokushu), translating to “Great Japan Satsuma Gyokushu.” Additional circular numerical markings “25” (in red) and “8” (in green) are also present on the base.
