General Sale - 1st September 2025
A late Victorian sterling silver ‘Aide Memoire’ by Deakin & Francis, housed within its original fitted leather case, dating to 1891-1892. The external rectangular case is crafted from black textured leather or faux leather with gold-colored trim and a brass-toned latch. The interior is lined with vibrant pink satin in the lid and dark red velvet in the base, precisely fitted to hold the hinged sterling silver object. This silver case features an elaborately chased or engraved surface adorned with a dense foliage pattern and a central, plain oval cartouche. Visible hallmarks include the maker’s mark “D&F” (for Deakin & Francis), sterling silver (lion passant), London assay (leopard’s head), and the date letter ‘q’ for 1891-1892. When opened, the silver object reveals a light tan leather interior with multiple compartments and a loop securing a silver-barreled writing implement, possibly a dip pen or mechanical pencil, featuring a brown section. The interior leather shows some light embossed motifs.
