A precision analytical balance, enclosed within a rectangular case of polished dark hardwood, likely mahogany, with glass panels to all sides and the top. The internal balance mechanism, including the central column, beam, and pan hangers, is constructed from brass or bronze, with two reflective pans suspended. The balance rests on a dark, possibly ebonized wooden base, supported by leveling feet. Accompanying the balance is a small, velvet-lined wooden box containing a set of fractional weights, alongside several loose brass weights, one visibly marked ’20’. Small metal handling tools are also present. This type of instrument was commonly used in pharmacy, apothecary, and laboratory settings. A loose white paper label, seemingly unrelated, is placed inside, reading: “BECKMANN THERMOMETER (CAPILLARY) [indistinct text] GERMANY”.
